Two years ago Maggie Costella decided to take control of her health. Since March 2008, Maggie has transformed her life. By adopting a healthy lifestyle that involves making better choices about food and exercise, Maggie has lost over 100 pounds.
In a lifetime we sometimes overlook and/or take for granted the blessings of every day. When faced with adversity, we each have choices. We can choose to let that adversity overwhelm us or we can face that adversity and gather our energies and spirit to focus on the beauties of life in all its forms. Life is truly a gift. There is no promise of a minute from now, a half an hour from now, or tomorrow.
My mitral valve replacement surgery this winter indeed brought home to me the thousands of reasons that I have to be thankful every day. Today, mitral valve surgery seems to be almost a minor surgery, thanks to the medical strides made in the last twenty years. Twenty years ago, it would have been a most dangerous surgery with very uncertain outcomes. The wonderful heart surgeons and medical professionals that we have in the Lancaster area should give each of us pause to reflect on how blessed we are.
We can choose to take our heart health for granted. I ask you not to do that. We owe it to ourselves, to our families, and to our friends to make the best health decisions and to adopt the best healthy lifestyles that we can. You are your best advocate. Don’t ignore what your body is telling you. Recognize potential symptoms, seek medical care, and take care of yourself. We only have this one life to live; we only go through this world once. You have the knowledge, the strength, and the spirit to make the right choices when it comes to your health and your heart. My surgery and my recovery give me cause to rejoice each day. You can experience the same good health by being a person of action.
Get inspired. Get informed. Join health and fitness experts, medical professionals, and women like you to hear the concrete steps you can take today for better heart health.
